President Joe Biden is pardoning simple marijuana possession offenders

President Joe Biden is extending humanitarian generosity towards simple marijuana offenders. This implies that, those convicted of simple possession of the substance will be pardoned.

As understood from his tweets, Mr. Biden is concerned that these convictions have frustrated too many lives compared to the extent of the offence. The pardoning will improve the access to opportunities (such as getting a job), that those whose names were on the convicted register could no longer enjoy.

In a series of heartfelt tweets, President Joe Biden stated:

"As I’ve said before, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana. Today, I’m taking steps to end our failed approach. Allow me to lay them out.

Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. Today I announced a pardon of all prior federal offenses of simple possession of marijuana, urged governors to do the same, and asked HHS and DOJ to review how marijuana is scheduled under federal law.

Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit. That's before you address the clear racial disparities around prosecution and conviction. Today, we start to right these wrongs."

Thinking out loud ... The gesture might be aimed to decriminalize the substance.
