Ingredients

1 cup Hibiscus (dry) leaves

2 medium beetroots:  washed, peeled and halved

Juice of 1 lemon and lime

Juice of half a grapefruit

Juice of 1 orange

Juice of 1 green and a red apple

2 whole star anise

2 cinnamon sticks

1 piece of peeled and sliced ginger root

Natural sweetener such as dates powder: adjust quantity to taste preference.

Learn to make dates powder here.

Instructions

1. Rinse the dried hibiscus leaves with cold water a few times, then drain well in a sieve.

2. In a large pot, combine the hibiscus leaves, star anise, cinnamon sticks, ginger root and chopped beetroots.

3. Pour in the pot of ingredients, 4 cups of water and bring the mixture to a boil on medium heat.

4. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the mixture has reduced slightly and the flavors have combined together.

5. Strain the tea into a large pitcher or jug to seperate and remove the solids. Discard the solids and retain the liquid.

6. Add the juices of the lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange and apples to the tea.

7. Add your preferred sweetener to taste. I'm using my homemade dates powder here. My recipe can be learned HERE.

8. Mix with a stirer.

9. Enjoy as hot tea or refrigerate to chill before serving.

Tips and Variations

■ Instead of boiling the leaves on medium heat in step 3 of instructions, you can steep tea on low heat overnight.

■ You can add juices of sweeter fruits such as watermelon, pineapple, cherries or grapes.

■ Adjust the amount of spices and sweetener to your taste preferences.

■ Add a few slices of fresh citrus fruits to the tea for garnish.

■ Experiment with different types of sweeteners such as agave, honey, dates syrup, or erythritol.

■ A few sprigs of fresh mint leaves can be added to the tea after dishing in a cup for extra flavor and refreshment.
